Elective Course Offerings

6th Grade

Zane's 6th grade program helps students develop strong study habits, learn valuable organizational skills, and positively navigate complex social situations that often arise during the middle school years. Zane offers a 6th grade elective rotation that includes art and seminars. Students will also alternate between physical education and music with students selecting either a band, chorus or orchestra specialization.

7th & 8th Grade

Zero Period: Zane offers two zero period options that begin at 7:30 am, a PE class for 7th and 8th grade and a Jazz Band class. District transportation is not available to get students to their zero period. Taking zero period PE may enable students to take two elective classes. Jazz Band students must be concurrently enrolled in the Band class.

Current Elective Course Offerings:
Art - Students will learn all types of art; drawing, painting, sculpture and pottery! Everyone can do art and express their creative side. This class will give you the confidence and skills that you can take with you to high school and beyond!

Band - We offer woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Students have opportunities to perform at games, in the community, for festivals, concerts, parades and competitions. Students get to make music everyday and accept the challenge of strong musicianship. 

Chorus - Chorus students perform in the community for festivals, concerts and competitions. Students get to make music everyday in a variety of styles, including contemporary, jazz, and multicultural.

Fitness and Skills for the Athlete - In this elective, students will have the opportunity to create both a fitness and skill enhancing program that matches their individual needs. No matter what sport students participate in, students will research specific training techniques, drills, and important fitness concepts that will be used to improve their own performance. Students will set goals, participate in fitness testing, and continuously strive to improve their performance.

Music Theater - Musical theatre offers a unique opportunity to develop your acting, singing, and dancing skills while boosting your stage presence and performance confidence. This course is designed for performers of all skill levels, providing both creative enrichment and practical training. Students learn to perform in a variety of settings while gaining an understanding of music theory tailored to musical theatre. They also explore the rich history and traditions of the art form and develop essential teamwork skills for successful ensemble performances. Join us to enhance your abilities and experience the transformative power of musical theatre!

Orchestra - Orchestra is a continuation of the elementary school program and gives students the opportunity to learn and understand musical notes, symbols, and terms as well as a chance to develop greater proficiency on their musical instrument. While students of all levels are welcome, previous instrumental experience is strongly recommended and daily home practice will be required. Students with no prior string experience may email the middle school orchestra teacher to discuss class expectations.

Robotics - This is an exploratory elective course that provides hands-on experience in basic principles of designing and model making.

Spanish  - This course teaches basic language patterns and vocabulary while also infusing cultural education and understanding. It includes the practice and learning of written and conversational Spanish, with the emphasis on preparing students for high school language courses. 

Student Leadership - This course enables a student to work and understand the importance of effective leadership, working toward an assigned task, building self-esteem, and learning how to work in a team environment. 

Yearbook/Newsletter - Explore the digital arts and get hands-on experience with graphic design, Photoshop and more! Build your digital literacy, creativity, and problem-solving skills in this collaborative and fast-paced course. Work with your class to create our school's yearbook.
